What causes acne?

Acne develops when the sebaceous glands in the skin produce excess oil, which then mixes with cells that line the gland walls, clogging the skin’s pores. Next, otherwise harmless skin bacteria colonize these pores, using the oil as energy in order to thrive and multiply. This is what causes the inflammation and redness of the skin typically associated with acne.
